The EcoCareer Academy
DeKhay’s Envo Nigeria’s GET3 EcoCareer Academy was born out of a deep concern for the environment and the marginalized communities most affected by its degradation. Our founders, Kelsey and Shawn, witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of flooding in their own community. Homes were destroyed, livelihoods shattered, and families displaced. The cascading effects were undeniable – economic hardship, social unrest, and a decline in overall well-being.
But amidst the crisis, they also saw hope. Communities came together, supporting each other through the challenges. Local knowledge and traditional practices proved invaluable in coping with the immediate aftermath. This experience ignited a passion to create a more sustainable future, one that empowers communities to not only survive environmental shocks but to thrive in the face of adversity.
Our Multi-Pronged and Adaptable Approach
We address these interconnected challenges through a comprehensive and adaptable approach that centers on empowering cohorts of illustrious and most affected youth from the communities most affected. These young individuals bring a unique perspective and understanding of the local context, allowing us to tailor interventions to address specific community needs.
Our adaptable model builds on a mentorship program, where we train these youth cohorts to become environmental stewards and community leaders. After successfully completing the program, these youth mentors then train the next generation of mentees, ensuring the long-term sustainability of our initiatives and fostering a legacy of youth leadership in environmental action.
The EcoCareer Academy have four central themes or departments we approach the situations from, which represents the four distinct solutions:
Circular Economy & Waste Management: We promote sustainable practices like composting, upcycling, and responsible consumption to reduce waste generation in communities. This not only lessens the environmental burden but also creates economic opportunities through the creation of new products and services from recycled materials. Training programs equip community members with the skills and knowledge to establish small waste management businesses, fostering local entrepreneurship and contributing to a more sustainable circular economy.
Water Conservation & Sanitation: We improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities, especially in flood-prone areas, preventing waterborne diseases and improving overall health. This includes working with communities to develop rainwater harvesting systems, promoting water-efficient practices, and constructing hygienic sanitation facilities. These interventions not only improve public health but also empower women and girls, who are disproportionately affected by lack of access to sanitation facilities.
Climate-Smart Agriculture & Food Systems: We support local food producers to build resilience against climate change by promoting techniques such as drought-resistant crops, diversified planting, and soil conservation practices. This ensures a stable food supply for vulnerable communities and reduces dependence on imported food, which can be disrupted by extreme weather events. We also advocate for policies that support sustainable agriculture and empower small-scale farmers.
Environmental Education & Awareness: We raise awareness about climate change impacts and equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to take proactive steps towards resilience and sustainability. This includes educational workshops, community outreach programs, and advocacy campaigns. We believe that an informed and empowered population is better equipped to protect the environment and build a more sustainable future.
